Bio
Maysoun Douas is an innovation expert with a Ph.D. in physics and a former City Councilor in Madrid, where she worked extensively on Innovation, Employment, and Entrepreneurship, particularly emphasizing diversity management and social justice policies. She has also served as an evaluator expert for the European Commission, named one of Spain's Top 100 Female Leaders in 2021, and an alumnus of the German Marshall Fund. She is also the promoter of the New Social Contract for the Twenty-First Century talk series, which is run in partnership with the Common Action Forum Foundation. More recently, she co-founded and led #EntierroDigno, an advocacy social movement claiming dignified burial rights for Muslim citizens.

Opening Session: challenges for democracy in Europe
This session will address the main advances, opportunities, setbacks and current challenges of democracy and democratic institutions in Europe, identifying the common and specific values that characterise European democracies, but also the different practices and conceptions that coexist throughout the continent. It will conclude with a joint reflection on what can be done from the different actors (institutions, activists, civil society and citizenry) and also jointly to protect and strengthen our democracies.
