Bio

Javier Pérez González is the director of Political Watch, a Spanish-based think-and-do-tank that 'nurtures the democracy of the future'. They are specialized in the development of civic technologies to promote transparency, participation and public accountability and in the encouragement of and informed public debate around the big challenges of our era. Javier studied Economics and Law at Carlos III University. Before founding Political Watch in 2011, Javier was the Economic Justice Research Coordinator at Oxfam International. With experience in international institutions (DG Development at the European Commission) and international negotiations (WTO in Geneva), Javier is an expert in Policy Coherence for Development, Trade & Development, social movements and civic tech.

Opening Session: challenges for democracy in Europe

This session will address the main advances, opportunities, setbacks and current challenges of democracy and democratic institutions in Europe, identifying the common and specific values that characterise European democracies, but also the different practices and conceptions that coexist throughout the continent. It will conclude with a joint reflection on what can be done from the different actors (institutions, activists, civil society and citizenry) and also jointly to protect and strengthen our democracies.
